Google unwires the US?

Google has offered a minimum bid of 4.6 Billion $’s for the 700mzh radio band that makes up the current TV broadcast structure. They make only one stipulation which is open access for everybody. Meaning that my Treo could tap into the band and laptop users could get online everywhere.

Google claims their idea is to offer easy access for potential high-speed internet providers. “The effort is backed by public interest groups and a coalition of major technology companies including Intel Corp., eBay Inc., Yahoo Inc., DirecTV Group Inc. and EchoStar Communications Corp.” (1)

The auction will not happen until late 2008 or 2009, when all TV signals go 100% digital.
