Recently I took my older 2 boys up to Gettysburg for their first visit. I went when I was about 12 and of course a lot has changed since them. However, my awe and love for country was strengthened again. I know the Civil War brought a lot of death to the American people. Brothers and Fathers fought against each other and the destruction of the land and materials was on a scale unseen on the American continent even to this point in time. One of the guys from the Ohio Valley Civil War Association played a fife for onlookers.
If you have never walked a battlefield know this, it is sacred ground. As Lincoln said,”But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.”
