Remembering Gettysburg

Recently I took my older 2 boys up to Gettysburg for their first visit. I went when I was about 12 and of course a lot has changed since them. However, my awe and love for country was strengthened again. I know the Civil War brought a lot of death to the American people. Brothers and Fathers fought against each other and the destruction of the land and materials was on a scale unseen on the American continent even to this point in time. One of the guys from the Ohio Valley Civil War Association played a fife for onlookers.

We had a great time watching the reenactors and seeing them drill and fire their weapons. You should make the time to stop by and take in some of our history. The movie and cyclorama in the Welcome Center are phenomenal! The Museum with it’s equipment displays; including small arms and rifles, tents, cannons, medical tools, and uniforms was wonderful. I also learned that because of the Civil War the USPS (US Postal Service) started home delivery to allow families to grieve in private for the loss of their loved ones.

If you have never walked a battlefield know this, it is sacred ground. As Lincoln said,”But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.
