where character counts and integrity is the keystone

Prejudice or Not?

“If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race, creed and color, we would find some other cause for prejudice by noon.” – George Aiken

This is a pretty ugly assessment of the human race.  I disagree.  I believe that we have the capacity to finally overcome our prejudices and hate towards other people that are not exactly like we are [in whatever way that is].

When I was a kid, my father served in the US. Army.  Racism was there and severely discouraged.  I mean, really my life depended on the black kid’s dad next door, the girl with bushy hair’s mom on the next block, and everyone else’s parent in the community!!!  My best friend happens to have Puerto Rican heritage, so what!  I am glad that his is confident in who he is and what he can do; but never has race even been an issue between us.  We are Americans and Friends first and we accept the different opinions and tastes the other has.

In fact, we have very few differences and a lot of similar tastes and preferences, oh yeah, we are Americans.  I think that is the problem with Americans today.  They keep going back to their roots & heritage too often; they are not adapting to the country they live in.  No, I don’t mean just immigrants, but those that are born and raised here.  Our memory is too short when it comes to our own history and we can’t remember what happened just 50 or 60 years ago.

Why do we not remember, why can’t we see the history of our nation and remember.  Why can’t we honor the sacrifices of those that have served and worked so hard to bring peace and equality to our beloved country?  One day, we may be able to reach that goal.  I hope it is a day that I will see.
